Scientific Investigations

Research Projects

Exploring past climate changes, oceanographic mechanisms, and vegetation ecosystems across continents.

Paleoclimatology & Ocean Dynamics

High-resolution reconstruction of marine and continental climate variations through the examination of ocean sediment cores. Using multi-proxy indicators including organic geochemical tracers, stable isotopes, and microfossil assemblages to understand ocean circulation patterns during the Quaternary.

Methods: Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry, Marine Palynomorphs, Core Scanning.

Tropical & Subtropical Ecosystem Resilience

Investigating the response of regional vegetation to rapid climate shifts in Africa, South America, and South Asia. Focusing on how terrestrial vegetation communities adapt to monsoon intensification, severe aridity phases, and changing sea-surface temperatures.

Regions: North-West Africa, Equatorial Atlantic, South America, South Asia.

Land-Ocean-Atmosphere Coupled Interactions

Unraveling the delicate feedback loops between terrestrial hydrology, dust transport, oceanic upwelling, and atmospheric circulation. Examining how atmospheric dust plumes offshore Africa fertilize marine phytoplankton communities and modulate regional climates.

Focus: Atmospheric Dust Flux, Nutrient Upwelling, Carbon Sequestration.

Proxy Data & Climate Model Integration

Bridging the gap between geological proxy records and state-of-the-art Earth System Climate Models. Comparing empirical palynological and isotopic data with simulated precipitation and ocean circulation models to refine predictive climate projections.

Partners: International PAGES working groups, Climate Modeling Centers.
